Economic Programs
Express Entry
Express Entry is a system where eligible individuals are accepted into a pool of candidates and ranked using a points-based system. Invitations to apply for permanent residence are issued on a regular basis to the highest ranked candidates in the pool or to targeted groups of people based on specific occupations or language requirements. In order to be accepted into the pool, candidates must meet minimum entry criteria for one of the following programs:
Federal Skilled Workers
The Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) program is a popular economic immigration program which allows skilled workers and their families to become Canadian Permanent Residents. Eligibility for the program is based on selection factors: age, education, language proficiency, adaptability factors, and arranged employment.
Canadian Experience Class
Eligibility for the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) program is based on at least 12 months of full time (or equivalent part time) paid work experience in Canada. Experience must be gained in NOC O, A, or B positions in the 3 years preceding the application and cannot be accumulated while studying.
Federal Skilled Trades
The Federal Skilled Trades program is based on at least 2 years of full time work experience in a skilled trade within the last 5 years. In order to be eligible for this program, applicants must have a validated job offer from a Canadian employer or a certificate of qualification in their trade.
Note: Meeting minimum eligibility criteria allows entry into the pool of candidates. Once in the pool, eligible candidates are ranked against each other and the top ranking candidates receive invitations to apply for permanent residence. It is important to understand that meeting the minimum program requirements is often not enough on its own to receive an invitation. Provincial Nomination Programs (PNP)
There are many different Provincial Nomination Programs that can lead to permanent residence for individuals and their families. These programs emphasize the intent and ability of the applicant to become economically established in the province of interest. Each program has its own eligibility requirements which are usually based on specific conditions in each province and in-demand occupations each province is targeting. In most cases a job offer from a Canadian employer is required.
Regular stream PNP programs require candidates to apply directly to the province of interest and then once the Certificate of Nominations is received apply directly to the visa office to obtain permanent residence. In the case of Express Entry PNP programs, candidates would receive a nomination from the province which would award them additional points for the Express Entry profile and ultimately lead to an invitation to apply for permanent residence.
